...while i'm at work browsing the web. but sometimes something comes across the RSS feed that i'm driven to take a quick look at while i'm at my desk.

but for the life of me, I can not figure out why this HUGE twin cities company that i work at blocks the entire MPR site. there are other, more obvious sites to block. but someone here must have some hate for MPR.

'the daily show' in St Paul

right on the heels of the colbert report's week-long stint in philadelphia, the daily show plans to tape a week's worth of shows from downtown st paul during the Republican National Convention.

since i was unable to get tickets to see TDS when I was in NYC two years ago, I appreciate their bringing the show to me!

hot chip & salsa

just got back from the hot chip show at 1st ave. i generally deride anyone who leaves a movie, sporting event, or concert early - but my back was aching something fierce so i grabbed a quick cab ride home about an hour into the show. ugh. i had to stand during an all-hands meeting for over an hour yesterday and i think it messed my back up bad. on top of being a crazy long week at work, i'm just glad to finally be home and chillin'.

the band is great, i've heard a bit of them on the current here and there... they definitely put on a good show. some friends of mine called me at work late this afternoon with an extra ticket, so getting to go for free made it all the better. i'm having trouble remember the last time i went to a sold-out show at first ave. i guess all the old-timey bands that i go to just aren't as a big a draw anymore!

yes... but how noisy are they?

This MSNBC article is about the Bahrain World Trade Center and its three windmill-like turbines that bridge between the two towers.

I wonder if they could do that in Richfield at Best Buy Headquarters?

Perhaps they could just append them to the ends of each building. They already look like ships - c'mon Best Buy... give 'em propellers!

State Farm - "Pulling our ad is humiliating"

Posted by barry | 4/12/2008 06:53:00 PM | 0 comments »

State Farm Director of Markeing Communications Tim Van Hoof posted in the comments on this streetblog article the other day that they discussed the ad internally and decided to discontinue it. I posted my feelings about the ad earlier this week, and noted a few page views from the State Farm domain a few hours later. I'd like to think I helped you come to that decision, Tim.

But the real props has to go to streetblogs for posting about the ad in the first place and the comments that pushed for the ad to be pulled. Thanks also to State Farm for being willing to acknowledge and correct what others would have dismissed as a tempest in a teapot.

is the central corridor LRT dead?

most likely, no. the guv cut the 70 million dollars (that he himself recommended) from the legislature's bonding bill via line-item veto, but as this article points out - this is most likely a political maneuver. Personally, I say do it without him, if this is the box he wants to be in; although the Democrats in the legislature are probably correct that there is no veto-override coming this time, as the outstate representatives would not have an incentive to go against the governor again, now that they've already gotten their pie. St Paul bore the brunt of the pen, having more than 110 million of 200 million in cuts striking them.

I don't think anyone believes Pawlenty when he says it was neither personal or political. This is payback for not getting his way on the gas tax, and done in a way where there could be no resistance.

It is still possible that the Central Corridor will get the funding it needs this year, and even if not - the choo choo will get funding and run at some point. It is no longer a matter of if, but when.

Saw this commercial last night, and it's no surprise that it ended up in my RSS feed from a couple of different sites today.

i guess auto-insurance companies are so hard-up for cash, they will try anything, including attempting to shame cyclists back into their automobiles. yes... this is the way to recover lost business! make fun of those former & potential customers and demean their lifestyle choice. we can save the cyclists from their humiliation and SAVE them a few bucks, too! i just bet the phones at State Farm are ringing off the hook this morning.

props to the streetsblog for turning the ad on its head. Yes, the cyclist IS fit, and you know the lady checked him out (even while snidely commenting on his attire). She'll be dreaming about those cycling thighs during her morning meetings, fer sure.
